Web developers around the web have been talking about the numerous social networking functionalities that permeate the internet these days. It doesn't help much that social networking has become very popular because of these functionalities. This only increases the urge of social networking site owners to develop functionalities that will continue to perk the interest of their members and guests alike. There is nothing wrong with functionalities really. In fact, it's what makes social networking exciting but sometimes it tends to muddle up social networking design especially when the site was not designed to adapt to the changing needs of users online.
Functionalities make social networking very easy and convenient for users. Especially when some sites seem to make it so difficult to accomplish something that can be easily done in one site because of a specific functionality therein, that one site already has the upper hand.
The problem however comes in when functionalities tend to take away the very essence of social networking which is human-to-human contact or what is more popularly called social contact. It is therefore important that a social networking design is balanced between technology (functionality) and personal touch (connection). It is not hard to see what happens when creating a social networking site is poorly designed in terms of functionalities. It is very essential then to plan the social networking design well ahead before building the site. Functionalities should be well chosen and well planned before it is integrated within the site. Is it something really needed? Is the functionality instrumental to the site's overall success? Will it keep users coming back? Or will it just bring harm on to your site and your business in the whole? Functionalities are not all there is to social networking but it is something that should be considered seriously for the social networking site to succeed.
